The Science Behind Mindfulness

The human brain is amazing. Neuroplasticity is the brain’s ability to form new neural connections over time. When there is injury or disease, the brain can miraculously reorganize and readjust by using the healthy intact nerve cells (called neurons) to form new connections. In short, our brains are malleable and can adapt to life and its challenges.

Mindfulness or the awareness of our thoughts and emotions can also influence brain plasticity. When we exercise certain parts of our brain, those parts get stronger. So, if we often think negatively, we reinforce this behavior and the more we focus on gratitude, the better we are at being grateful.
